THE CIRCLE OF POWER
Sensei and I were high in the mountains overlooking Yugawara. The air was crisp and we stood silently, breathing and enjoying the clean air.
Sensei broke the silence by saying softly, “Stand as if in attention,” and I knew from the tone of his voice that special instruction was forthcoming.

THE CLASSICAL MAN
By Don Warrener
I have been a student of Richard Kim since 1968 when I first received my shodan from him through my teacher at the time, Benny Allen. Since our first meeting, I knew he was not just another karate instructor who could punch and kick. The reason I have remained as a student with him is because I continue to learn from him. I went to the now famous Nishiyama summer camp in San Diego, which has been going on for over 35years, to both train and do an interview with Master Richard Kim, 10th dan in Shorinji ryu karate.

THE COSMIC PUNCH
“A man knows no more to any purpose than he practices. Knowledge is not found, unsought, in heaven.” ~ Pollok
In the annals of unarmed combat, one argument has raged, is now raging, and will continue to rage as long as men get together and discuss the merits of which is the best kind of blow, and whether a left hook, right cross, straight right, uppercut, or a jab is superior. It has never been decided and probably never will as long as the arguments remain academic!

The interest in martial arts in South America is as great, if not greater, than in any other part of the world. Each country in South America has very strong karate roots, mostly with the (Shotokan–oriented) JKA (Japan Karate Association ) or with shito-ryu.

In the United States and Canada, people from all walks of life take martial arts, even if they are working-class people. This is because the standard of living is very high.

Basically, the philosophy of the samurai was enlightenment. This is the conclusion that the martial arts masters and the samurai came to and which I learned in all the years I’ve been involved.”
On a purely physical basis, there is no difference between man and animal. But man is different from the animal in that man is a spiritual person. Being a spiritual person, he needs philosophy.

PATIENCE
“Patience is the ballast of the soul.”
O’Sensei Richard Kim
It was a warm summer evening at Karate Camp. The student was training on a grassy knoll overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Behind him, well hidden in the pines was the dorm for the camp’s students and instructors. The student had been taught an advanced kata that afternoon and since sunset he had been trying to perfect one particularly difficult move. The harder he tried, the more the move escaped him.

THE WRINGER AND THE PRESS
If you were to take a statistical survey on the most unpleasant branch of the martial arts, especially in Kodokan judo, without fail the report would show that the most disagreeable aspect is being on the receiving end of strangleholds or chokes.

LIVING IN "PLUS ONE"
O’Sensei would often say that in our journey from the womb to the tomb we have no choice in birth or death, but we do have a choice in how we live. He would say that if you took a seed and placed it in a dry, dark drawer and left it there for two months you would find only a seed when you opened the drawer.
