JOHNNY PEREIRA (continued)

Johnny PereiraIn every dojo there are the ones who start the quality of students. In Sensei Kim’s dojo on Market Street, that he ran with Professor Duke Moore, that person was Johnny Pereira. He was known for his attention to detail and his quality of kata.

He left his training with Sensei Kim in the mid- to late-1960s as Martial Arts politics were not for him. He believed firmly that karate was Okinawan not Japanese. One of his protégés was Nobu Kaji.

His students still remember him and their description of him says it all, “He was a good guy”.
