TAKEDA TAKACHIYA on Faith... (Continued)

One day, a fourteen year old boy approached Odagiri and told him that his father had been killed, that he had been following the man who had committed the murder and had finally found him. (The boy had challenged the man and they were due to fight the next day.) At first, the boy didn’t tell Odagiri that the match was set for the next day but simply asked Odagiri to teach him. Odagiri agreed, telling the boy that in three months he would be able to face the man. The boy then admitted that the fight was scheduled for the next day. Odagiri thought to himself that it was impossible to teach this kid enough in one day so that he would be able to beat the man.

Odagiri told the boy that he would tell him what to do and that he would have to do exactly what he was told. He said, “Tomorrow, before you reach the site of the match, take out your two swords. When you are twenty feet away from the man, yell out his name and charge, holding one of your swords in jodan (upper block position). When you reach him, jab at him with your other sword. You can’t lose the match because I, Odagiri, told you how to win. Let’s practice awhile to make sure you got it.”

They practised awhile but the boy didn’t really get it. Odagiri’s heart went out to him. He told the boy that he was doing fine and that he was ready. He said, “Be sure to do exactly what I showed you tomorrow.”

The boy had faith in Odagiri. He believed in him and in what he had told him. He did just as he was told. When he saw the man, he called his name and charged. Just as he reached him, he threw up one sword. At that point the man came down with his sword to hit the boy in the head. The boy just barely managed to block him, as he jabbed the man and killed him. Takeda turned out to be a very famous person.
