Itoman Bunkichi vs The Turtle (Continued)

Kame wanted to challenge Bunkichi but Bunkichi always managed to avoid him. Kame came to the conclusion that it was because Bunkichi was half white. Kame knew that Bunkichi wasn’t afraid. Kame’s intellect figured that Bunkichi wanted to remain a deep mystery by not losing to anybody. The truth was, however that Bunkichi avoided Kame because he didn’t want to hurt him in a fight since he knew that he could beat him.

Bunkichi’s teacher told him that the best way of dealing with Kame was to humiliate him, along with giving him a good beating. Merely beating him wouldn’t be enough since Kame might just train harder or simply shoot him in the back. Kame was physically as strong as Bunkichi.

Since Bunkichi ate a lot, he had may ways to obtain food. For one, he would go to a temple with a big bell, take it off its hanger, putting it down on the ground. (Takeda did this also.) Then, when the priest went to ring the bell, he would find it on the ground and have to ask some towns people to help him lift it back up. These bells were so heavy that it normally required about 4 people to lift them.

At this point, Bunkichi would step up and volunteer to do it alone. When the town’s people doubted his ability to do it alone, he would wager his services as a clean up man for one month against a good meal if he were successful.
Naturally, he would always win the bet since he was the one who took it off originally.

Pretty soon word spread about Bunkichi, so whenever he was in a town with a big temple bell, he was offered food before he could perform his trick. Kame also had this kind of strength so Bunkichi figured that the best way to humiliate him was to defeat him by using strength.

Finally Kame decided to attack Bunkichi. He started by following Bunkichi around with the idea of attacking him at his weakest moment. He followed Bunkichi into town where he saw him enter a brothel and shack up all night. Kame thought it best to wait until six or seven in the morning when Bunkichi would be tired from making love all night. When Bunkichi left the brothel early that morning, Kame decided that it would be even more desirable to attack Bunkichi after he ate a big meal so he followed him to a restaurant.

Bunkichi knew he was being followed so he arranged to stuff himself full of food. When Bunkichi came out, he knew what was on Kame’s mind so he patted his full stomach and sighed. Bunkichi then walked away and picking out a high wall, leaned against it.

At this point Kame came out into the open and challenged Bunkichi. Kame always carried his twin swords with him but he took them off since he could see that Bunkichi had no weapons on him. Bunkichi accepted the challenge but stayed where he was, leaning up against the wall.

Kame figured that he was just tired so he decided to go for Bunkichi’s stomach by using his head as a battering ram. He charged Bunkichi who at the last moment placed his hand against the wall and leaped up and over it. Kame knocked himself out against the wall.

Kame had a student by the name of Chung Duc Soo in the 1920s. Soo was always in trouble with the law but the police could never catch him because of his skill. Soo could elude his would-be captors by leaping over cars, walls, etc.

One time when they thought that they had him, he ran into a blind alley and at the last minute he escaped by jumping over the eleven foot high wall at the end of the alley.

This took place in Hawaii and the chief of police at that time was a man by the name of Duffy. Duffy made it a point of honor to catch Soo. Finally he was able to learn where Soo slept at night, underneath a church. The police surrounded the church and captured Soo. He was later tried, convicted and sentenced to hang. At that time, the law simply said to hang by the neck for fifteen minutes. For a normal man this was sufficient but when they hung Soo by his neck, his neck didn’t break and he was smiling while he stared at Duffy. Thirteen minutes passed with no sign that Soo was suffocating so in desperation Duffy ran to Soo, jumped up, clinging to Soo’ s legs. It was too much for Soo and he strangled.

Bunkichi had defeated Periera with his strength as well. He knew that in a crowd only eight men can attack you at a time. He would pick one out and attack him body and soul, disposing of him. After defeating four or five men in this manner, the rest of the attackers will usually disperse because they’ll see that they can’t handle you.
